- Vaporware--Empty Promises or Marketing Tactics?
-
- Vaporware; guess we're all familiar with the term, anyone can easily
- name a few products that were said to be set to dominate the market
- in a few months time but actually never made it. And we're only talking
- about computer hardware here, let's just not get into all the wild stuff
- some software companies have dreamed up in the past few years. But,
- really, what was the net effect of all of that hyped up marketing and
- promises made on products never delivered?

-
- From the consumer's point of view it may seem that any company responsible
- for manufacturing these would-be products loses a lot in credibility,
- which naturally is undeniable. But, in hindsight we see that initially
- everyone is enthusiastic about the new products or concepts being
- presented, and usually takes them seriously. Although the company in
- question (the questionable company?) may fail to deliver on the products
- in time, or never even produce them at all, it did raise the bar for
- competitors and thus may have discouraged their research and development
- on similar products.
-
- On the other hand, if it misses its introduction date or fails to deliver
- at all, its competitors might have a product ready soon after the supposed
- target date with much of the would-be product's performance and/or
- features.
- So, in the end, the vaporwarer might not benefit, while its competitors
- will, and so will the end user.
-
- Could vaporware to some degree be a driving force for Moore's Law, or a
- force that propels the computer industry in general? As, quite frankly,
- the fear of being in 2nd place or being less than a top ten tier seller
- is what pushes many companies in this industry on the bleeding edge of
- technology, whether that edge is make-believe or for real. Quite a
- picture...just think of all those companies' marketing departments
- manipulating each other to gain an edge in R&D and public esteem!
- Meanwhile, keep your own VW detectors tuned up and switched on.
